Health Risks of Sleep Deprivation and Over-Sleeping: New Findings

April 20, 2026

Recent research conducted by a university hospital reveals alarming trends regarding sleep patterns among adults aged 40 to 60. The longitudinal study observed 9,000 participants over a span of 15 years, highlighting the significance of adequate sleep for maintaining health. The findings indicate that individuals who slept more than eight hours per night experienced a 27% higher risk of mortality, whereas those who slept less than seven hours showed an elevated risk of 11%. Notably, the researchers found age-related differences in sleep impact. For the 40s demographic, insufficient sleep posed a greater threat, while for those aged 60 and older, excessive sleep was linked to increased health risks. Furthermore, the average sleep duration for South Koreans was reported at 6 hours and 58 minutes, which is 18% less than the OECD average. Alarmingly, only 7% of the population reported getting quality sleep, a figure that stands at half the global average.

The research team advocates for establishing regular sleep habits and suggests that maintaining sleep durations around seven hours is crucial for safeguarding health. This study not only emphasizes the need for awareness about sleep quality and quantity but also prompts a broader conversation on public health initiatives aimed at improving sleep patterns.
