Virtual Reality Marathons: Running the Great Wall from Home
April 23, 2026
BEIJING — Geography is no longer a barrier to the world's most scenic marathons. Yesterday, the first-ever "Global VR-Race" saw 10,000 participants competing in a hyper-real simulation of the Great Wall of China. Using synchronized treadmills and high-fidelity headsets, runners experienced every incline, wind gust, and pebble of the historic route from their own homes.
"I was in my basement in London, but I could feel the humidity and hear the cheers of a virtual crowd in Beijing," said one participant. The event utilized 5G haptic technology to simulate wind resistance based on the user's running speed.
The race also featured a "ghost mode," where users could run alongside the avatars of legendary marathoners from history. The success of the event has prompted major athletic brands to invest in "VR-ready" footwear that tracks footstrike patterns with millimeter precision.
